When we look at poverty stricken communities, the needs can be overwhelming.  As a result, the needs we see often become the sole focus of our attempts to help. 

But what if we change our approach?  What if, instead of focusing solely on the needs of the community, we made an intentional effort to identify all of the assets that are already within the community?  Then, instead of placing "band-aids" to cover up the needs, we can mobilize the assets to change the neighborhood from the inside out.

All over the country, asset based community development is changing the way that we see and address our communities.  Right here in Memphis, MUM is confronted with individuals in need on a daily basis.  We can no longer just throw money at the problems.  The real solutions will come when we learn to assist people in realizing the value that God places on each individual life.  God has given everyone gifts, talents, and abilities.

For this reason, MUM is embarking on a community asset mapping project in an effort to better identify and recognize the God-given value that already exists in some of our most "needy" neighborhoods.
