Memphis
Urban Ministry has a heart for our city. Our city is
one with a long history of struggle. Years of racial
injustices have segregated our neighborhoods, our schools,
and even our churches. Poverty has turned parts of our
city into abandoned wastelands. Urban renewal now
threatens to inflict even more turmoil in the lives of the
poor. There is no doubt that the struggles still
exist in our city, but we believe that hope can be found in the coming
Kingdom of our Creator. In this Kingdom, we see God's
mercy, justice, and love take root in the forgotten places
of our city. We seek to experience the Kingdom of God
right here in Memphis, Tennessee.
One way we
strive for this is through Christian Community Development.
We seek to:
-
Listen to
the needs of our community
-
Develop the
assets already in our neighborhoods
-
Promote an
environment of racial, economic, and generational
reconciliation
-
Create
opportunities for the poor to regain the dignity of work
-
Be advocates
for the poor and voiceless
-
Reconcile
people with their Creator and with Creation
