Plunge Details

Begins on Friday night at 8 PM
Ends on Sunday at 2:30 PM
(We ask that all group members be able to stay for the entire time.  If someone in the group needs to arrive late or leave early, we ask that this person plan to attend a future plunge)

Cost:  $40/person

What to bring:  Pack as if you were going on a simple weekend camping retreat. 

What about food and accommodations?  Your group will be provided with food and shelter for the weekend.

The Issue Today, about 1.4 billion people live in absolute poverty.  Even in the wealthiest nation in the world, poverty has brought portions of our cities to ruins.  But poverty isn't just a statistic.  Poverty destroys lives.  As Christians, understanding poverty means more than memorizing some statistics - it means understanding the lives of the poor and the challenges that they face.  In doing this, we hope to learn how to better love our neighbor.

"I think the world would be a better place if everyone experienced a weekend like the one created with the “MUM Poverty Plunge”.  It certainly wasn’t the most enjoyable retreat I have ever attended, but it might have been the most profitable one.  We were stripped of our luxuries and forced to live in a world that many people stay in every day.  It is easy to criticize, overlook, and ignore what you have never experienced yourself.  Our group will never look at poverty quite the same after tasting just 42 hours of it in a somewhat controlled environment.  We will look at, interact with, and care for the poor differently because of the few days we spent in Memphis.  God voiced his concern for the poor, oppressed, and forgotten people of our society through intense meditation on Scripture, a variety of challenging experiences, and interaction with people we rarely stop to consider.  I believe the MUM Poverty Plunge placed our group in a much better position to live out God’s love for the poor and hurting people of our world."
